Software Conflicts |

Overview Conflicts between software programs installed on your computer are the leading cause of crashes, errors and problems when using ANY software program. Cool Page will work on any computer it was designed to be installed on, and if it doesn't work, then there was something misconfigured or damaged in your Windows System PRIOR to installing Cool Page. Windows System Files There are several folders in the Windows directory on your computer that contain some very important key files that enable the operating system to function properly. One of these folders is called "System", usually found here: C:\Windows\System. In this folder are various files, mostly programs that perform very basic functions. Almost every piece of software on your computer relies upon these files and programs to a greater or lesser degree. For instance, the program named MSVCRT.DLL is related to the use of graphics. Almost all graphics programs depend upon this file in some manner. These "system files" are SHARED by all software installed on your computer. When you first get your computer or when Windows is reinstalled, these system files are exactly the way they are supposed to be. However, some software programs, upon installation, will overwrite these key system files with their own versions of those files. While this may then enable the new program to function on your computer, other negative results can occur. The new system files that have been placed on your computer may not allow other programs that depend on them to function properly. And worse, often when these programs are uninstalled, the changed files will remain on your computer. This is a form of lazy programming done by software developers. Rather than work out how to make their program run effectively, they often will redesign some key Windows files to suit their needs, instead of creating their own. This is one of the reasons that Windows can get the reputation of being unstable or quirky, when in fact the operating system IS stable and works as was intended, until one of those offending programs is installed. (even MS is guilty of this practice sometimes) When Cool Page is installed, NO CHANGES ARE MADE to your existing Windoes System files. Corrupted Files Files on a computer can get corrupted in an infinite number of ways. The foremost reason for file corruption is the overwriting of Windows System Files by software programs during installation. Surges in electrical power, as during a thunderstorm, can also damage or alter files. Shutting down your computer improperly can also damage files. These are merely a few of the common causes of file corruption. Repair Corrupted Files Use the System File Checker utility that comes with the Windows Operating System. Use this tool to scan your system for altered or damaged files and to repair or replace them.
