Any user or customer who desires support with a Publishing problem or getting changes to appear in browser after Publishing
MUST first complete the following steps below.

Cool Page Customer Support will direct all Publishing issue inquiries to this web page to obtain support.  From thousands of customer's Publishing issues we handled, never once was Cool Page found to be the cause of the problem, and in most cases the user will solve the problem by following these steps.

Customers may not submit a support inquiry at bottom until they've completed all following steps in sequence.

Troubleshoot Publishing
Do These Steps in Sequence

Step 1 - Make sure that you have an active connection to the
internet.  Reconnect to be certain.  Try checking or sending
new email to be sure.  Browsing web pages is not sufficient to
insure connection is active, due to extensive caching in some
            browsers.

Step 2 - Make sure that your Membername and Password in the
Cool Page Publish window are typed correctly as given to you
            by your selected Host.
Membername and Password are case
            sensitive
.  Make sure the CAPS LOCK key on your keyboard
            is turned off.

Step 3 - If Folder name (in Cool Page Publish window) is empty,
contact your Host to verify the name of subfolder where your
html files are to be located, else leave it empty if Host
confirms none is required.  If Folder name is not empty and
your Host requires a subfolder, make sure any required
subfolder is first, and is separate from any subsequent text
(other subfolder(s)), if any, with a forward slash (/) character.

Step 4 - If your Host appears in Hosts drop-down menu, then choose
it and FTP Site will be set automatically.  If your Host is set to
"Other host" in Cool Page Publish window, contact your Host
to verify the correct FTP Site address needed for FTP upload
(transfers).  Hosts sometimes change the FTP address.  The
FTP Site is case sensitive. Make sure CAPS LOCK key on
            keyboard is turned off.

Step 5 - Test YOUR internet connection at
this website now to insure it
is fast enough.  A rate less than 4 KiloBytes per second can
cause Publish failure.  If so, reboot and try using a different
dial-up number to connect to your ISP
and contact your ISP
to help you troubleshoot your connection.  Try Publishing
during non-peak usage times when your ISP network is less
            congested.

Step 6 - Make sure that your Host is fast enough or that the hosting
service is active.  If you have already published a webpage
then try to view it in your browser.  If the page does not load
or if it loads slower than usual, contact your Host and
repeat
            Step 5.

Additionally, you may use the Traceroute utility that comes
with all versions of Windows Operating Systems.  Use this tool
to diagnose your internet, network or Host connection.
            See the
Traceroute Guide for instructions.  Send the results to
your ISP or Host as proof if necessary.

If you have not published a webpage yet,
repeat Steps 1-5
before moving on to the next Step.

Step 7 - Try accessing your FTP site using the FTP Test Tool below. If
you cannot connect to your Host with this tool then see the

FAQ's below.

AOL users - Minimize the AOL Browser. Start Internet
Explorer.  Open this webpage in Internet Explorer and then
use the FTP Test Tool.  Do not use tool with the AOL browser.

Step 8 - After completing the above Steps, if you still cannot Publish
            using Cool Page, read these
FAQ's below on this page.
FTP Test Tool

Use this tool to troubleshoot your Publishing problem.  If you
cannot connect to your Host using this tool then 1 - 7 above

Answers

1. I published my first webpage and it does not appear in my web browser when using the correct address?

Most webhosts require that your first published page is named index.html or index.htm.  This is because by default a web server will automatically look for the page named "index" before looking for other pages on a site.  Use the
FTP Tool Test above to check if the files you Published are on your Host's FTP server. Instructions are in the Tool window.

2. I published a page and some of the images do not appear when I view the page on the internet?

If Cool Page Publish told you it completed successfully, then the images are properly published and some people can probably see them.  The problem is that when the internet is real slow, the page may time-out and some images may not transfer completely or at all.  This is not a problem with Cool Page or the way it was Published.  The problem is caused by slowness in either YOUR connection to the internet or slowness of the Host.  In particular, some of the free and ultra-cheap Hosts can go thru periods where they are overloaded and very slow.

AOL users
- The AOL network sometimes will alter the image files for faster transfer through their network.  This process can result in missing or impaired quality images on your pages. Contact AOL Support to disable any image caching/proxies and file transfer optimizing.

3. How do I update a page I already published?

Open the Cool Page file, edit it, then Publish it again.  Doing this will "overwrite" the existing webpage, with the same name, on the webhost's server.  Remember also that in order to view the new page online, you must either configure your web browser to "always view new content" or you must use the "Refresh" or "Reload" button in your web browser.  In Netscape hold down the Shift key and click Reload.  In Microsoft's Internet Explorer press Control and F5 keys at the same time.  This forces the browser to ignore any caches and get the latest information directly from the remote site.

Refreshing may not always bypass the cache, and in this case the only solution is to delete cache.  In Internet Explorer, you may go to Internet Options in Tools menu and then Clear History and Delete Files and ALL offline content, but note this will delete all your history and cached web pages (a good thing to do periodically for computer performance maintenance).  Then reboot your computer and access the web page again.

4. My Publish settings are correct and Publish still fails?

Your connection to the Internet (or host site) was too slow, or your webhost has a problem with their FTP servers, or firewall or network settings prohibit FTP transfers.  Many firewalls, such as Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security are by default configured on installation to prevent FTP transfers.  Try publishing during non-peak hours, contact your webhost, contact your local network administrator about FTP policies, or configure your firewall to allow FTP transfers.  Definition: a software firewall is a security program that monitors, detects and controls information from passing in and out of your computer to or from the internet or local network.  Many users (especially dsl and cable modem users) have a firewall installed and may not even know it.  Ask your ISP.  Windows XP operating systems have a built in software firewall.  Consult your XP operating system Help re FTP permissions.

5. How do I delete or manage my files on the FTP server?

Some Hosts have a web page for site management where you may login and manage your hosted files.  If your Host does not have such a feature then use a separate
FTP Client to manage your hosted files, or you may use the FTP Test Tool as described in Step 7 above.

6. Publishing seems to take forever to complete?

The page you are publishing is too large or your connection to the internet is slow.
Optimize your page or try publishing during non-peak hours.  A future free upgrade of Cool Page will have a feature to not re-upload unchanged, large files when re-publishing the same page.

7. I edited a page and I can see the changes I made when I preview the page but after I publish it I still see the old page in my browser?

If you publish a page Cool Page will tell you if the upload was successful.  If you then go online to view the page and you still see the old page, then you are probably looking at a webpage in the browser's cache.
(
see FAQ #3)

You can check to see if your newly published files are your Host's FTP server by using the
FTP Test Tool as described in Step 7 above.  Instructions for checking the date of the files on the server are included in the Tool window.

Your ISP may be using a Proxy Server.  A proxy server is a cache of webpages stored on an ISP's servers that get refreshed every so often.  They uses these proxy's to reduce their bandwith expenses and speed up your web browsing.  The drawback is that new content may not be available for viewing immediately.  Contact your ISP for instructions on how to set up your internet conection without using their proxy.

AOL users
: The AOL Network uses a proxy system . You should be able to configure your AOL browser to not use a proxy network.  Contact AOL Support for instructions.

8. How do I publish if my ISP uses a Proxy Server?

If you must publish via a proxy network then you will have to use a separate FTP Client and follow the webhost's instructions for uploading to their servers.  Create your pages in Cool Page and use the Export feature from the File menu.  Cool Page will display a window when Export is completed that shows all of the files that must be uploaded.  Upload
ALL of the files using the FTP Test Tool above as described in Step 7 above.

9. I tried everything and I still cannot publish my webpage. What could cause this?

The cause for Publish failure could be due to corrupted Windows Operating System Files, or your Host is using a non-standard FTP service.  See the Resources page at this website for links to Windows/Computer Help websites.  Sometimes, simply rebooting your computer will refresh the Windows System Files.  Contact your Host about the standards of FTP service they are using.  Cool Page will Publish to any Host that uses a standard FTP set up.  Try Publishing to a different Host.  Most users have free hosting that comes with their paid ISP account.  Contact your ISP about this.

10. What do the the numerical codes in the FTP program window mean?

See the
Server Error Codes Guide.
top

11. I upgraded from Free version to Registered version and still see popup alerts and/or Cool Page Logo on my published pages.

To eliminate the popup alerts and/or Cool Page Logo, open each page in Cool Page, delete the Cool Page Logo and re-publish each page.  If after re-publishing you still see the alerts and/or logo, you are probably viewing pages in your browser cache (temporary internet files).  Delete the files in the cache, close browser, re-start browser and return to your web site.  Other cause of this issue is that you are using a proxy internet connection (contact ISP or network admin to get proxy updated with newer pages).

12. Host requires Passive Mode FTP for uploading?

There are two basic types of FTP configuration used on web servers today, Active Mode FTP and Passive Mode FTP.  Most web servers use Active Mode FTP.  For security reasons, or because of server firewalls, some FTP servers use Passive Mode FTP.  Cool Page uses the DOS FTP program that comes with Windows, configured for Active Mode FTP, the more common configuration in use toady by web hosts.  If your Host requires using Passive Mode FTP, you must
Export your pages from Cool Page and use a separate FTP Client or your Host's online site manager.

Windows XP Service Pack 2

XP Service Pack 2 by default will turn on the Internet Firewall which
prevents FTP programs from Publishing your web pages.  If your
computer has XP Service Pack 2 and you cannot Publish, see this
article from Microsoft.
