What Is a Search Engine? A Search Engine is a program (which usually resides on remote server) that lets you do keyword searches for information on the Internet. There are several types of search engine; the search may cover the title of documents, the URL or the full text. Some well known Search Engines: Yahoo Alta Vista AllTheWeb MSN Search Lycos Ask Jeeves AOL Search More Search Engines How They Work The major search engine websites use network tools (special software) that constantly surf the internet and log many of the web pages on the www. These tools, called "spiders" have the ability to read the contents of an HTML file. They can read the title of a webpage as well as the text on the page, and they will also log the website address of the HTML file. When a website is submitted to a search engine, that website will get added to the search engine index of www content. An HTML file is basically a text document that contains special characters; letters numbers and symbols. These characters are the HTML code. Search engine spiders are very interested in the beginning part of the HTML code. The two most important parts are used for the description of your web page and the list of keywords that are likely to be used by someone doing a search. The Description The description part of an HTML file is a brief summary of what your web page or website is all about. When using a search engine, you do a search using a keyword that seems to be related to the topic you are searching for. The search engine will then display a page of resuts. It will usually show the title of the web page followed by a description of the page. This description is taken from the code of the HTML file. Example The Keywords The keywords part of an HTML file is a list of keywords that are related to the content of your webpage and website. These should be the keywords that are used most often when someone looks for something using a search engine. |

Your Hidden Keywords Click the Hidden Tab of the Page Properties to add Hidden Keywords to your page. These words and phrases should be separated by a comma. Per some search engine specialists, the keywords used on your page should be words that also appear in some the text parts of your web page. |
